I recently had the pleasure of joining Ric for the first-ever live recording of the Giant Minds Entrepreneurship Podcast. We explored the journey of Trunki, discussing the challenges, successes, and key lessons learned along the way.
The Early Days: From Idea to Prototype
The Trunki journey began during my university days when I designed a ride-on suitcase for kids as part of a national luggage design competition. Inspired by my love for design and problem-solving, I combined practical luggage with playful functionality. Despite early enthusiasm, pitching Trunki to manufacturers was met with skepticism—they couldn’t decide if it was luggage or a toy. After several rejections, I realized I had to launch it myself.
The Dragon’s Den Experience
One of the pivotal moments we discussed was my appearance on Dragon’s Den. Facing rejection on national television was a tough blow. As I walked out empty-handed, I feared it would ruin my business. However, when the episode aired, it had the opposite effect—sales skyrocketed, and Trunki found its true audience. It was a lesson in resilience and the power of connecting with your target market.
Navigating Challenges: From Legal Battles to Manufacturing Setbacks
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. I shared stories of defending Trunki against counterfeiters, including a landmark case in the UK Supreme Court. I also recounted the decision to buy the Magma Moulding factory, saving local jobs and bringing manufacturing back to the UK. These experiences underscored the importance of adaptability, protecting your brand, and trusting your instincts.
